...or so goes my attempt to translate the final line of Madách's The Tragedy of Man. Wikipedia gives: "I have told you, Man: strive on, and trust!". George Szirtes: "Man, I have spoken: strive on, trust, have faith!"
Whatever it is, we're not meant to give up. A short flyer sold by a homeless person contained lines similar to this: "If you try, you may lose. If you've given up, you've already lost."
If a couple are worried about the cost of their wedding, they don't say: this is meaningless, let's not have a wedding. Look at all this business built up around wedding dresses, cakes, etc. They don't say: the costs will spiral, and we will divorce in the end anyway. Even if many people do -- but not all. They strive to make it different. Frugal, but intimate. They don't say: all this money could have gone to support poor people. If they so wish, they can use the wedding to fundraise for poor people. And of course, invite people they haven't seen for a long time. And not least, they can have a good time. Because celebrations are also a valid human need.
And so it is with the Olympics.
But we will not give up.
